Austin Tailgating Guide: UT Football, Austin FC & More
Austin is one of the greatest sports cities in America β home to the University of Texas Longhorns, Austin FC, Formula 1's Circuit of the Americas, the Round Rock Express, and a passionate fanbase that turns every game day into a full-blown celebration. But anyone who's tried to navigate parking, traffic, and tailgate logistics at DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium or Q2 Stadium knows it can be a headache β especially for large groups trying to stay together. Therefore, we've created the ultimate Austin tailgating guide, covering every major sporting venue, the best tailgating spots, food and drink setup, game day timelines, and why a party bus from Austin Party Ride beats driving and parking every single time.
Tailgating is more than a pre-game ritual in Austin β it's a culture. Whether you're firing up brisket in a parking lot at 7 AM for an 11 AM kickoff, gathering at a pub before an Austin FC match, or setting up camp at COTA for the US Grand Prix, Austin does game day bigger and better than almost anywhere. This guide covers everything you need to make your next tailgate legendary.
UT Longhorns Football at DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium
There is no bigger sporting event in Austin than a University of Texas Longhorns football game. DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium holds over 100,000 fans, making it one of the largest stadiums in the country. On game days, the entire campus and surrounding neighborhoods transform into a massive, orange-clad celebration. The energy is electric β from the Bevo Boulevard fan fest to the Longhorn Band's βTexas Fightβ echoing across the 40 Acres, UT football is an experience every Austin visitor (and resident) should have at least once.
The tailgating scene: UT's tailgating culture is enormous but structured. The university designates specific lots for tailgating, and premium lots fill up fast. Lot 40 (the LBJ Library area) and Lot 80 (east side of the stadium) are popular spots. Many fans set up along San Jacinto Boulevard and in the Bevo Boulevard area near the north end zone. Greek houses and alumni organizations claim their territory on game day, but there's room for everyone.
Bevo Boulevard is the university's official pre-game experience, located north of the stadium. It features live music, food vendors, fan activations, and appearances by Bevo XV (the live longhorn mascot). It opens 3-4 hours before kickoff and is free to attend. This is where many fans without a tailgate setup gather to soak in the atmosphere.
Austin Trivia
Austin was named the "Live Music Capital of the World" by the Texas Legislature in 1991.
UT Game Day Timeline
For an 11 AM kickoff: Arrive by 7-7:30 AM to claim your tailgate spot and set up. Grill, eat, and drink from 8-10 AM. Walk to the stadium by 10-10:30 AM to watch warm-ups and enjoy the atmosphere. Game starts at 11 AM. Post-game: expect 30-60 minutes to clear the stadium, then 60-90 minutes of post-game traffic. Total commitment: about 8-9 hours. For a 2:30 PM kickoff: Arrive by 10-10:30 AM. Tailgate until 1:30 PM. You'll be out by 7-8 PM. For a 6 PM kickoff: Arrive by 2-2:30 PM. Tailgate through the afternoon. Night games have the best atmosphere and the worst traffic afterward.
Parking reality check: Parking near DKR is extremely limited and expensive. Campus lots require permits ($50-$150+ per game). Public parking garages fill up fast and charge $30-$60. Street parking in surrounding neighborhoods is heavily restricted. Many fans park 1-2 miles away and walk, take shuttles, or rideshare. This is where a party bus completely changes the game β literally. More on that below.
The Tailgate Setup: Food, Drinks & Gear
A proper Austin tailgate requires proper preparation. Here's what the best tailgates have in common. Food: Brisket is king β many UT tailgaters start their smokers at 5-6 AM for an early kickoff. If you don't have a smoker, bring sausage wraps (smoked sausage in a tortilla with cheese and jalapeΓ±os), breakfast tacos for morning games, burgers and hot dogs for quick grilling, queso and chips (a non-negotiable Texas tailgate item), and a big cooler of fruit. Pre-made food from Salt Lick, Rudy's, or HEB's deli works great if you don't want to cook.
Drinks: Beer is the tailgate staple β Lone Star, Shiner Bock, and local craft brews from Austin Beerworks and Live Oak are favorites. For cocktails, premade ranch water (tequila, Topo Chico, lime) is the unofficial drink of Texas tailgating. Bring plenty of water and ice β Austin heat doesn't care about kickoff time. Use our BYOB calculator to figure out exactly how much to bring for your group. Pro tip: freeze water bottles to use as ice packs in your cooler β they'll keep things cold and give you cold water as they melt.
Gear: A pop-up tent or canopy (10x10 is standard), folding chairs, a folding table, a portable grill (charcoal or propane), a Bluetooth speaker, cornhole boards, a football for tossing, trash bags (leave no trace), and sunscreen. If you're going all out, add a TV with a generator to watch other games, a misting fan, and team flags. Your party bus can store all of this β our party buses have generous luggage compartments, so you can load up your tailgate gear and we'll get it to the lot for you.
Austin FC at Q2 Stadium
Austin FC joined MLS in 2021, and the city immediately embraced the team with the kind of passion usually reserved for Longhorns football. Q2 Stadium, located in North Austin near the Domain, is a purpose-built, 20,738-seat soccer-specific stadium with a supporter's section (the Verde Wall) that rivals any in MLS. The atmosphere at Q2 is intense β Austin FC's supporter group, Los Verdes, leads chants and songs throughout the entire match, drums pounding, smoke from flares drifting across the pitch. It's genuinely one of the best live sporting experiences in Austin.
Tailgating at Q2: The scene around Q2 Stadium has grown significantly since the team's inaugural season. The Parmer Lot (east of the stadium) is the primary tailgating zone, and it fills up with tents, grills, and Verde flags on match days. Several nearby businesses, including Hopsquad Brewing and Circle Brewing, host pre-match events. The Domain, a massive outdoor shopping and dining complex adjacent to Q2, offers restaurants and bars for pre-game meals and drinks. Many fans gather at Celis Brewery or Oskar Blues Brewery before walking to the stadium.
Game day timing: Most Austin FC matches kick off at 7:30 or 8 PM on Saturdays. Arrive by 5-5:30 PM for tailgating. Walk to the stadium by 7 PM to find your seats and catch the pre-match atmosphere. Parking at Q2 is limited and costs $25-$40 per car. The Domain garages are an option but fill up fast. Rideshare drop-off zones can be congested. A party bus handles all of this β we drop you at the gate, and you text us when the final whistle blows.
Did You Know? Austin's food truck scene features over 1,300 mobile food vendors.
Round Rock Express (Dell Diamond)
The Round Rock Express, the Triple-A affiliate of the Texas Rangers, play at Dell Diamond in Round Rock β about 20 minutes north of downtown Austin. Minor league baseball is one of the best values in sports entertainment: tickets are cheap ($10-$25), the atmosphere is family-friendly, and the promotions are creative (dollar beer nights, fireworks shows, theme nights). Dell Diamond holds about 8,500 fans and has a beautiful grass berm beyond the outfield where you can spread a blanket and watch the game.
Tailgating at Dell Diamond: The parking lots open 2 hours before first pitch, and tailgating is welcome. Bring a grill, a canopy, and your cooler (though outside beverages aren't allowed inside the stadium). The pre-game atmosphere is relaxed and fun β families, friend groups, and corporate outings all mix in the lots. Inside the stadium, the concessions are surprisingly good (and affordable) for a minor league park. The Express typically play April through September, with games on weekday evenings and weekend afternoons.
UT Longhorns Basketball at Moody Center
The Moody Center opened in 2022 as the new home of UT men's and women's basketball. This state-of-the-art arena seats 15,000 and also hosts major concerts and events. UT basketball has a passionate following, and the atmosphere at Moody Center is electric β especially during Big 12 conference games (and now SEC games with the conference move). Tailgating for basketball is less elaborate than football, but fans still gather at nearby bars and restaurants before tip-off. Scholz Garten, the oldest operating beer garden in Texas (established 1866), is a popular pre-game spot just south of campus. The Crown & Anchor Pub and Cain & Abel's on the Drag are also go-to gathering spots.
Parking at Moody Center: Limited and pricey. Campus garages charge $15-$30. Street parking is restricted. The Moody Center is right on the edge of campus near I-35, making it accessible by car but challenging for parking. A party bus can drop your group at the entrance and pick you up afterward β no circling the block, no parking fees, no post-game traffic slog.
Formula 1: United States Grand Prix at COTA
Circuit of the Americas (COTA) hosts the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix every October, and it's one of the biggest sporting events in Texas. Over 400,000 fans attend the three-day race weekend, transforming Southeast Austin into a motorsport mecca. The event features not just F1 racing but also concerts (past performers include Billy Joel, Eminem, and Ed Sheeran), fan zones, food courts, and an electric international atmosphere. COTA also hosts MotoGP, NASCAR, and other racing events throughout the year.
Tailgating at COTA: Traditional tailgating isn't really a thing at COTA β parking lots don't allow grilling, and the venue is more festival-style. But the pre-race experience is massive: the Fan Zone inside the circuit has activations, simulators, team merchandise, and food from Austin's best restaurants. Many fans stay at nearby hotels and shuttle in, or park in the massive general admission lots ($50-$100+). Traffic on race weekend is notoriously bad β Elroy Road and Highway 71 back up for miles.
Why a party bus dominates at COTA: Parking at COTA during F1 weekend is chaos. Lines to enter lots can take 2+ hours. Post-race exit can take 3+ hours in stop-and-go traffic. A party bus from Austin Party Ride cuts through the hassle β we have experience navigating COTA's traffic patterns and can use bus-specific entry routes. Your group rides in comfort with drinks and music while other fans sit in gridlock. We handle F1, MotoGP, and all COTA events. Get a quote for your race day group.
Fun Fact: Austin's ACL Festival at Zilker Park spans two weekends and features over 140 artists.
Why a Party Bus Beats Driving to Any Austin Sporting Event
Let's be honest: driving to a major sporting event in Austin is stressful. Parking is expensive, limited, and competitive. Traffic before and after games is brutal β 100,000 fans all trying to leave DKR at the same time creates gridlock that can last 90 minutes. If you're tailgating, someone in your group has to be the designated driver, which means they can't fully enjoy the day. Rideshare services during events have extreme surge pricing β $40-$80 for a ride that normally costs $12. And coordinating multiple cars for a group means inevitably losing someone, running late, or dealing with parking in different lots.
A party bus from Austin Party Ride solves every one of these problems. Here's how it works: we pick up your group at a central location β your house, hotel, apartment complex, or a bar. The party starts immediately with music, drinks (BYOB), and the pregame energy of having everyone together. We drive you to the venue and drop you off close to the entrance. During the game, your driver is nearby and ready. After the game, you text us, and we're there within minutes β no surge pricing, no waiting in the cold, no searching for your car. The ride home is its own celebration, especially after a win.
The cost is surprisingly reasonable. Use our cost-per-person calculator to see the breakdown. For a group of 20, a party bus for a UT game day (6-8 hours) can work out to $30-$50 per person. That's comparable to parking plus one rideshare β but you get a premium experience, zero stress, and the ability to drink freely. For corporate outings, a party bus to a UT or Austin FC game is a fantastic team-building activity that your employees will actually enjoy.
Group Coordination Tips
Getting a large group to a sporting event requires coordination. Here are our best tips from years of game day transportation. Pick one pickup point. Trying to make multiple stops adds time and complexity. Choose a central location β a bar, a park, or someone's house β and have everyone meet there. Set a firm departure time. If your bus leaves at 8 AM, it leaves at 8 AM. Communicate this clearly and repeatedly. Collect money in advance. Use Venmo, Zelle, or Cash App to collect everyone's share before the day. This avoids awkward money conversations on game day. Assign a point person. One person communicates with the Austin Party Ride driver via text. They relay pickup/drop-off info and keep the group organized.
Plan your BYOB. Our BYOB calculator tells you exactly how many drinks to buy for your group size and trip duration. Stock the bus cooler before departure and you'll save a fortune versus buying $12 beers at the stadium. Just remember: glass bottles aren't allowed on our buses (cans and plastic only), and please drink responsibly.
Austin Sports Facts & History
Austin's sports history is rich and colorful. The University of Texas football program has won four national championships (1963, 1969, 1970, 2005) and produced legendary players including Earl Campbell, Ricky Williams, Vince Young, and Colt McCoy. DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium was named after former coach Darrell K Royal, who led the Longhorns to three national titles. The stadium has been expanded multiple times and now seats over 100,000, making it the ninth-largest stadium in the world.
Austin FC became the 27th MLS franchise in 2021 and immediately set attendance records. Their supporter group, Los Verdes, sold out Q2 Stadium for every home match in the inaugural season. The club's Verde and Black colors have become a citywide identity, with flags flying from businesses and homes across Austin. Q2 Stadium was built specifically for soccer and is widely regarded as one of the best soccer-specific stadiums in MLS.
Circuit of the Americas has hosted the F1 US Grand Prix since 2012 and has become one of the most popular races on the F1 calendar. The 3.426-mile track features 20 turns, including the iconic Turn 1 hill that gives fans panoramic views of the circuit. COTA's economic impact on Austin exceeds $600 million annually across all events. The Round Rock Express have been a fixture of Central Texas sports since 2000, and Dell Diamond has hosted over 10 million fans.
